Fiji - 27 November 2006

Due to reported increased risk of a military coup in Fiji, this morning the NZ Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade (MFAT) have increased their travel warning to 'High Risk'.

Following is how your Travel Insurance Policy will provide cover for travel to Fiji:

Policies issued prior to Monday 27 November 2006:
For travel departures up until, and including, Friday 1 December we will cover costs to amend travel to an alternative destination, or a later date, provided these costs do not exceed the cancellation costs of travel. In instances where travel cannot be amended we will cover cancellation under the terms of the policy purchased.

For travel departures beyond Friday 1 December there is no cover for cancellation and/or amend costs, however we will advise of any changes by Friday 1 December.

For people who continue with travel plans to Fiji they will be covered under the usual terms of the policy purchased. Please note however, that all travel policies do not provide cover for any travel to destinations classified as 'Extreme Risk' by MFAT - we do recommend that travellers monitor the situation by referring to the MFAT website www.safetravel.co.nz

Policies issued from Monday 27 November 2006:
There is no cover for any claim in relation to the Fiji situation.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will advise of any changes to this advice accordingly. MFAT also encourage New Zealanders travelling or resident in Fiji to record their details online at www.safetravel.co.nz.
