Safe Travel Campaign

Turkey

We advise against tourist and non-essential travel to areas close to the Iraq border because of the high risk to personal security.

There is some risk to your security in Turkey and we advise caution.

There is a strong likelihood of further terrorist activity in Istanbul, Ankara, in other major centres, and in tourist areas in Turkey. Terrorist attacks have occurred in a number of places, including Istanbul, Izmir and Diyarbakir in recent months. Further attacks could well occur throughout Turkey.

New Zealanders should exercise a high level of personal security awareness especially in commercial and public areas, including landmark places known to be frequented by foreigners, public transport facilities, government buildings, hotels, bars, and popular shopping areas.

In view of terrorist incidents and a general increase in unrest in the southeast, sensible precautions should be taken for personal safety, including vigilance in public places and when travelling in this region. We note that there are restrictions on movement, enforced by the security forces, in the areas of Turkey bordering on Iraq and people straying into these areas risk arrest.

ANZAC Day Commemorations at Gallipoli

The Turkish authorities have put in place extensive measures to ensure the safety and security of New Zealanders attending the 2007 ANZAC Day commemorations at Gallipoli. Visitors should at all times comply with the directions of the Turkish security authorities.

New Zealanders travelling to or resident in Turkey should have comprehensive medical and travel insurance policies.

New Zealanders visiting or living in Turkey are encouraged to record their details with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
