The idea behind a drive holiday is flexibility and time to travel at your own pace, so add in days or take out stops from our suggestions as you please to cater for your own interests. NEW ZEALAND CAR TOURING ROUTES
To help you get the most out of your car or motorhome touring holiday we have put together some suggested touring routes that you can use as a guide to seeing this beautiful country. We have shown an average number of days to get around each touring route, but of course it is all about taking things at your own pace, and that's the great thing about the itineraries below you can add or delete days from what we have suggested to suit your schedule.

BAY OF ISLANDS & NORTHLAND FROM AUCKLAND - 4 Days/3 Nights
Day 1 - Depart from Auckland and travel north up the east coast, past seaside townships and beautiful beaches through to Whangarei city - a great spot to stop for lunch or a coffee and a browse around interesting shops. Continue north to the Bay of Islands to overnight in Paihia.
Day 2 - Explore Paihia, there is historic Waitangi, Russell and
Keri Keri or take to the waters of this beautiful region on a Fullers cruise or any other of the activities in the region. Overnight in Paihia.
Day 3 - Travel to the northern most tip of the North Island, Cape Reinga and see the Tasman and Pacific Oceans meet. Along the way there are is some beautiful rural and seaside scenery. Overnight in Paihia.
Day 4 - Depart your accommodation and return to Auckland via the west coast, your journey will take you via the scenic Hokianga Region. A good stop to make is at the Waipoua Kauri Forest, where you can see one of New Zealand's largest Kauri trees. Return to Auckland where you can either conclude your journey or continue on and add on one with one of the other suggested driving routes.

COROMANDEL & HAWKES BAY FROM AUCKLAND - 4 Days/3 Nights
Day 1 - Leave Auckland and head south following the east coast along the beaches and forest of the Coromandel to Whitianga where you can stop for lunch and take in one of the beautiful beaches and overnight here.
Day 2 - Travel through the farmlands of the Bay of Plenty and around the dramatic scenery of the rugged East Cape coastline. There are many historic museums and relics along the way to stop and see. Continue on to Napier where you overnight.
Day 3 - Spend the day in the Napier Hawkes Bay region, you can visit a winery that this region is so famous for or take a trip out to see the Gannet colony of Cape Kidnappers or take in the magnificent Art Deco architecture of the city. Overnight in Napier.
Day 4 - You have the option here of concluding your tour and heading back to Auckland today or, adding on the Thermal Explorer route in reverse.

AUCKLAND-ROTORUA & TAUPO THERMAL EXPLORER - 7 Days/6 Night
Day 1 - Depart Auckland and journey south through the lush farmland of the Waikato. Continue onto Rotorua to spend the night.
Day 2 - Spend the day in Rotorua partaking in the many activities of the region, one good option is the Rotorua 5 star pass that includes a range of top attractions. Overnight Rotorua.
Day 3 - Take the morning in Rotorua to fit in anything you didn't get to do yesterday, Off Road New Zealand has some great activities, then it's just under an hours drive (traffic permitting) to Taupo where you overnight.
Day 4 - Spend the rest of the day in Taupo, which has a great reputation for trout fishing, skydiving and all sorts of fresh outdoor activities. Overnight in Taupo.
Day 5 - Travel to the vineyards and beaches of the lovely Hawkes Bay, from here you overnight in Napier and enjoy the activities this city has to offer.
Day 6 - Spend the day in Napier enjoying any one of the number of activities on offer in this spectacular region, we do recommend a wine tour or perhaps a hot air balloon ride! Overnight Napier.
Day 7 - Today you can either return to Auckland or add on the Coromandel & Hawkes Bay Tour (above and do this in reverse).

WAITOMO, NATIONAL PARK & WELLINGTON FROM AUCKLAND - 3 Days/2 Nights
Day 1 - Depart Auckland and journey south through the lush farmland of the Waikato along the way take time to stop at the Waitomo Caves and take the Glowworm Caves tour. Continue onto the Tongariro National Park to overnight.
Day 2 - Spend the day exploring the park and enjoying the beautiful surroundings. Overnight Tongariro National Park.
Day 3 - Continue south through Waiouru where a stop at the Army Museum is very interesting. Continue on through Taihape to Wellington and the conclusion of your tour or add on the interisland ferry and add on the Picton to Christchurch touring route.

ALPINE TRAVERSE, PICTON TO CHRISTCHURCH - 4 Days/3 Nights
Day 1 - Start in Picton and head to Kaikoura, spend the day in Kaikoura, where you can partake in many of the super marine and wildlife activities of the region. Please remember the pre-booking for most of these activities is essential as they are very popular. Overnight Kaikoura.
Day 2 - Depart Kaikoura and make your way to Hanmer Springs, spend the day relaxing and enjoying this beautiful region. Overnight Hanmer Springs.
Day 3 - Depart Hanmer Springs for the scenic alpine drive through Lewis Pass and Reefton to Greymouth where you overnight.
Day 4 - Depart Greymouth and head south-east to Christchurch, take in the awe-inspiring scenery along the way as you travel through Arthurs Pass and onto Christchurch to conclude your tour. Or add on the Southern Heritage tour including Queenstown.

WEST COAST TOURING ROUTE - 4 Days/3 Nights

Day 1 - Starting at Queenstown, make your way north through Wanaka, and to the west coast, through Haast to Franz Josef or Fox Glacier to spend the night.
Day 2 - Spend the morning partaking in any of the activities of the region. Then head north up the coast to Greymouth to overnight.
Day 3 - Travel from Greymouth continuing up the coast past the famous pancake rocks at Punakaiki, to Wesport with it's famous coaltown museum and seal colony. Return to Greymouth to spend the night.
Day 4 - Depart Greymouth and head through the Arthurs Pass back to Christchurch for the end of your tour.

SOUTHERN TOURING ROUTE INCL QUEENSTOWN - 5 Days/4 Nights

Day 1 - From Christchurch head inland to Mt Hutt - a top New Zealand ski field, then travel south to Geraldine and have a stop at Lake Tekapo for a view of the famous Church of the Good Shepard. Continue through Twizel and onto Mount Cook. Overnight at or nearby Mount Cook.
Day 2 - Spend the morning at Mt Cook, before heading through Omarama and head to either Wanaka or Queenstown to overnight.
Day 3 - Spend the day in Wanaka/Queenstown enjoying some of the activities this region offers. Overnight Wanaka/Queenstown.
Day 4 - Head to Dunedin, where you can see some historic sites, visit New Zealand's only castle, see where the famous southern beer - Speights is brewed and visit the Cadbury Factory. Overnight Dunedin.
Day 5 - From here you can either add on the Southern Scenic trail in reverse or make your way back up the east coast to Christchurch to conclude your tour.

FERRY JOURNEYS - THE INTERISLANDER
ZIP OR CRUISE ACROSS COOK STRAIT WITH THE INTERISLAND LINE
The Interisland Line operates ferry services across Cook Strait for passengers and vehicles between Wellington, in the North Island, and Picton, in the South Island.
Crossing Cook Strait is one of New Zealand's most memorable and spectacular journeys. It takes in the sights of the lower North Island coastline plus the scenic entrance to the South Island through the Marlborough Sounds.
The Interisland Line's two conventional ferries - Arahura and Aratere - take three hours to cruise across Cook Strait. Once onboard, passengers can choose from a wide range of facilities including bars, cafés, a children's play area and a cinema - alternatively they can stroll outside and enjoy the majestic views from the decks.
Passengers can also zip across Cook Strait on The Interisland Line's fast ferry in around two hours during busy times of the year.
For a small surcharge, passengers can enjoy Club Class. All three vessels offer a private 'Club Class' lounge, complete with comfortable couch seating as well as complimentary newspapers, magazines and refreshments.

TRAIN JOURNEYS - TRANZSCENIC UNIQUE TRAIN JOURNEYS
TranzScenic is New Zealand's only passenger rail company providing services the length of the county including some of the most breathtaking train journeys in the world. There are 4 train services:
The Overlander and the Northerner operating between Auckland and Wellington
The TranzCoastal between Picton and Christchurch
The TranzAlpine operating the scenic alpine route between Christchurch and Greymouth.

NEW ZEALAND INDEPENDENT COACH HOLIDAYS

AUCKLAND TO BAY OF ISLANDS - 3 Days/3 Nights Tour
Day 1 - Cross the Auckland Harbour Bridge and travel north via the Hibiscus Coast to the beautiful Bay of Islands. Arrive in Paihia and enjoy a guided visit to the Waitangi Treaty House where New Zealand's most important document of state was signed. The rest of your day is at leisure.
Day 2 - A day at leisure for you to enjoy the many activities available.
Day 3 - Cruise to Cape Brett and enjoy the famous 'Hole in the Rock' tour, before returning to Auckland.

AUCKLAND TO ROTORUA - 3 Days/2 Nights Tour
Day 1 - Travel to the fascinating Waitomo Glowworm Caves where you will enjoy lunch, then experience a guided tour of the famous glowworm grotto. Continue on from here to Rotorua. In the evening enjoy a Maori Hangi (feast) and concert.
Day 2 - Today you will experience the many varied sights that Rotorua has to offer. New Zealand's flora and fauna is on display as you enjoy a farm show before travelling to Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve. Learn about traditional Maori crafts at the Maori Arts and Crafts Institute and then enjoy an afternoon at leisure.
Day 3 - Spend the morning at leisure, there's great Rotorua sightseeing and activity options (own expense). Travel back to Auckland in the afternoon.

MILFORD SOUND (CHRISTCHURCH-QUEENSTOWN) - 4 Days/3 Nights Tour
Day 1 - Travel south from Christchurch across the Canterbury Plains, through the Mackenzie Country via Lake Tekapo. Continue on to Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park and then onto Queenstown.
Day 2 - Travel along the shores of Lake Whakatipu to Te Anau, gateway to the Fiordland National Park. From the Homer Tunnel, emerge into the Cleddau Valley. Join your Milford Sound Red Boat Cruise for an unforgettable experience exploring this majestic Sound. Return to Queenstown.
Day 3 - You have a free day to enjoy any of the great activities Queenstown has on offer (own expense).
Day 4 - The tour concludes this morning ending in Queenstown.

GLACIERS TOUR FROM CHRISTCHURCH - 6 Days/5 Nights Tour
Day 1 - Travel south across the scenic Canterbury plains and onto Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. Then travel onto Queenstown, New Zealand's adventure capital.
Day 2 - Travel along the shores of Lake Wakatipu to Te Anau, gateway to the Fiordland National Park. From the Homer Tunnel, emerge into the Cleddau Valley. Join your Milford Sound Red Boat Cruise for an unforgettable experience exploring this majestic Sound.
Day 3 - You have a free day to enjoy any of the great activities Queenstown has on offer.
Day 4 - Travel north via Lakes Wanaka and Hawea. Enjoy the rugged West Coast scenery through Haast Pass and continue onto Franz Joseph.
Day 5 - A leisure day, you can optionally partake the available activities (own expense).
Day 6 - Travel to Greymouth and board the TranzAlpine train (seat in coach only) for a journey famous for its spectacular mountain scenery as it traverses the Southern Alps, which divides the East and West Coasts of the South Island. Travel across the Canterbury plains to Christchurch.
